Kefir is a creamy, drinkable cultured dairy product.  Much lighter than yogurt, it makes a great base for summertime smoothies!

It’s best to purchase a plain, unflavored kefir so that you are in control of how much added sweetness goes into your smoothie.  Plain kefir, like yogurt, is very tart.  However, most flavored kefirs and yogurts have ridiculously high amounts of added sugar!

Additionally, choose a kefir that is whole fat and organic.  Healthy fat provides satiety in a meal and helps keep blood sugar levels stable.  Always choose organic dairy products to be sure that there are no residues of growth hormones or antibiotics in them.

Believe me, it’s not easy to find a whole fat, organic, unsweetened dairy product!!  Here’s the kefir I currently love – it’s even from cows that have been solely grassfed!

And this is the nut milk I’ve been loving!  Though completely unsweetened, the toasted coconut adds a rich, natural sweetness to this milk.  You may need less honey to sweeten your smoothie if you use this milk.

Use more berries if you want a thicker, frostier smoothie.  Feel free to add in any superfoods I didn’t list here!  Ground flaxseed, bee pollen, protein powder, collagen protein, cacao nibs or chia seeds are a few examples.

Probiotic-Rich Kefir Smoothie

1/2 c. plain, whole, organic kefir

1/2 c. nut milk

1/2-3/4 c. frozen berries of choice

1-2 T. honey

Superfood add-ins of choice

Blend, pour, enjoy!
